Ohio schools Superintendent Susan T. Zelman gave her long-expected resignation this morning.
She will stay until a new superintendent is named, and can remain in an advisory capacity until Dec. 1. Zelman is one of three of finalists for the dean of college of education at the University of Oregon. State school board President Jennifer Sheets said there is no time frame for a search, but she expects it to move quickly. A search firm proposal likely will come before the board in June. Speaking at a departmental employee awards event, Zelman expressed pride in her nine years on the job, but was also looking forward to new challenges. She got three standing ovations from the education staffers in Riffe Center auditorium during the very emotional speech. “As I prepare to move on, I am proud of the people who have stood with me, and worked alongside me, and served this great cause of truly making Ohio schools a model for the nation,” Zelman said, her voice cracking with emotion. After her talk, Gov. Ted Strickland lauded her effort even though he was a major impetus behind her departure. Only about a quarter of the crowd stood and applauded when he was introduced after Zelman's remarks. “I want to thank her for her love of this state, and her love of those of you who have served
under her and especially for your love of the children of this state,” the governor said.
