THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Skybus Airlines will make its first foray into the New York market by flying to Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., 55 miles north of Manhattan. Twice-daily flights between both Port Columbus and Skybus’ new focus city of Greensboro, N.C., will start Jan. 6.

“We know travelers are looking for really low fares and nonstop flights, and we believe our pricing structure will not only attract current flyers, but open up the market to many other who now find air travel simply too expensive,” said Skybus CEO Bill Diffenderffer in a statement.

Tickets were scheduled to go on sale at 11:30 a.m. this morning at www.skybus.com. As with all Skybus flights, the first 10 seats on each plane are priced at $10 each way, with fares escalating after those are sold out.

The service was announced at a ceremony in Newburgh this morning marking the takeover of airport operations by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The former U.S. Air Force base had previously been privately run.

Flights begin the day that JetBlue plans to pull out of Port Columbus, a move that was announced last week. JetBlue officials attributed the move to their inability to raise fares to a profitable level here. Airport representatives and travel professionals predicted New York fares could rise with JetBlue’s exit, so they will be closely watching whether Skybus has any impact there.
