PHOENIX—Residents got their first look at a real light rail car running down a street here as officials conducted tests.

At a speed of three miles an hour, the light rail car traveled down a mile of track along Washington Street Tuesday as engineers walked alongside.

The test was conducted to evaluate the rail line's software and electrical system.

The first 20 miles of the $1.4 billion light-rail project are currently being built. A Phoenix-Mesa line is expected to be running by December 2008.
